چکیده

Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials with tailored properties are developed for wave manipulation, filtering, and cloaking aerospace defense applications. While traditional EM exhibit fixed behaviors due to unchangeable material geometries after fabrication, reconfigurable allow tunable performance through electrical/mechanical reconfiguration strategies. Traditional biasing circuit-based electrical poses challenges complex circuit design, while motor-driven mechanical can lead bulky tethered structures restricted adaptability. Herein, magnetically actuated structurally enhanced adaptability/conformability different geometries, showing merits of fast, reversible, programmable shape morphing, developed. Magnetic actuation enables metamaterial's between flat deployed, folded, curved folded states both conformal freestanding 3D morphing. Locally, the fold subwavelength units properties, switching all-pass band-stop upon structural reconfiguration. Globally, structure conform morph surfaces. The metamaterial also serves as a medium customizable by rationally designing attached conductive patterns varied filtering performances such narrow-band, dual-band, wide-band behaviors, illustrating design flexibility application versatility metamaterial.

Broadband electromagnetic metamaterials with reconfigurable fluid channels

We present the design, characterization, and experimental verification of broadband and tunable metamaterials based on reconfigurable fluid channels. We demonstrate through simulation that a finite-height cylinder of water in a background medium behaves as a nonresonant metamaterial. By changing liquid type or adjusting liquid level, we tune the effective material parameters of the metamaterial...

Magnetically actuated nanorod arrays as biomimetic cilia.

We present a procedure for producing high-aspect-ratio cantilevered micro- and nanorod arrays of a PDMS-ferrofluid composite material. The rods have been produced with diameters ranging from 200 nm to 1 mum and aspect ratios as high as 125. We demonstrate actuation of these superparamagnetic rod arrays with an externally applied magnetic field from a permanent magnet and compare this actuation ...

Magnetically Actuated Multiscale Medical Robots

Magnetic manipulation systems designed to date have typically relied on either stationary electromagnetswhich facilitate straightforward real-time control, but result in large and complex systemsor slowly moving permanent magnetswhich generate strong fields, but are typically controlled in a quasistatic fashion. In the Telerobotics Lab at the University of Utah, we are exploring the use of smal...

Theoretical and Experimental Study on Magnetically- Actuated Micromirrors for Electromagnetic Nde

Magnetically-actuated Micromirrors as Micro-electromechanical devices have exhibited their superiority over other magnetic sensing techniques in terms of high sensitivity and high spatial resolution, which is favoured not only by quantitative measurement but also imaging of magnetic field distribution. In our research into magnetic field sensing and imaging, a 2D magnetic field sensing system w...

Reconfigurable terahertz metamaterials.

We demonstrate reconfigurable anisotropic metamaterials at terahertz frequencies where artificial "atoms" reorient within unit cells in response to an external stimulus. This is accomplished by fabricating planar arrays of split ring resonators on bimaterial cantilevers designed to bend out of plane in response to a thermal stimulus. We observe a marked tunability of the electric and magnetic r...
